Elections - A La Libanaise
Posted On 04/23/2009 21:52:44

I read today an article on Al Jazeera and it made my stomach churn with anger!

The 2009 elections are drawing near in Lebanon and it is now an open fact that ALL sides are paying big amounts of cash to buy votes from voters.  I heard of cases where entire families were being given airline tickets, accomodation and extra cash for their trouble on the day.

Once upon a time, when a more dignified Lebanon existed, such shameless activites were regarded not only as immoral but illegal.  Anyone caught red handed, bribing voters or receiving a bribe for a vote was arrested and jailed.  Now things are different in this modern day silicone and material driven Lebanon where anything goes.

The buying of votes is detrimental to both voters and candidates alike.  Voters will end up bringing to power a corrupt and law breaking individual and the candidate him or herself will end up with an audience of corrupt supporters who follow the Dollar rather than ethics.

Obviously, most candidates do not care... this is their stepping stone to vaster riches and to make more money by getting bribed themselves byt the powers that be...

Long live Lebanon

Charcoal Grill - True Lebanese home cooking in London!
Posted On 01/28/2009 09:26:41

A few days ago I discovered a piece of heaven right here in London! It is a newly opened and furnished Lebanese resturant, right in the heart of this bustling metropolis. What immediately attracted me to this fine establishement is the smell emanating from the kitchen. I was walking outside and suddenly I smelt the distinct flavour of Lebanese kebabs - so like a true Lebanese I followed my nose... Being a skeptic by nature I thought "Here we go, yet another Lebanese restaurant..." but the smell of the kebabs got the better of me and I soon found myself on a table with a few mezze and a mixed grill. I over-ordered, over-ate and it was DELICIOUS! This is true Lebanese home cooking that even beats some restaurants in Lebanon. The food was simply divine and succulent, with the flavours intact. I found myself back in Charcoal Grill a few times over the course of the week and I am yet to discover something that I do not like. The prices are very reasonable and the food is superb. The team is made up of a Lebanese chef and sou chefs - all enthusiastic and passionate about the food. If you like Lebanese food, this is the place to go and try. If you are Lebanese and miss home cooking, fear not, home is not too far away, home is Charcoal Grill Sahtein! Charcoal Grill 148 Marylebone Road NW1 5PN Telephone: 020-7224 3756

Lebanon crunches back!
Posted On 12/07/2008 08:41:46

I just read in a BBC report how Lebanon was fairing well under the dark blanket of the much dreaded and dastartadly credit crunch.

For once, the ball seems to have swung in our favour and by vitue of the fact that we've been nursing an ailing economy for the past years, has in fact worked out to our advantage.  The Lebanese in Lebanon have had to learn to live modestly (I am not referring to the minority few who live in debauchery - these by no means represent the true majority)

Recession is a blessing, it brings people together and teaches us discipline and reminds us of our humanity.  We are now seeing economies of extravagance and madness collapse at the blink of an eye.  These were unsupported mirages that served no genuine purpose but selfish financial lust.

Everyone was spending money they did not have and our debts grew far beyond our incomes and the real horrors of the credit crunch at a consumer level are yet to come.  Luckily for us the Lebanese, we have been going through this major evolution for the past few years and like good pupils, we come to class with a difference this tiem; we have all learnt our lesson!
